I hate busy days like today. I managed to open the forum this morning after I had been at work for 3 hours and that was it. First time again today that I have time to visit the forum. Blegh..

Thanks Crusader - the important part to take away is this:
“When charged and used under proper conditions, vapor products pose no more of a fire risk than cellphones and laptops that use similar lithium-ion batteries,” Gregory Conley of the American Vaping Association said in an email. “However, when vapor products are subjected to extreme conditions or used with unwrapped or damaged batteries, shorts can occur.”

I had a battery whose wrap got slightly damaged, so I unwrapped it, rewrapped for safety. We also are using proper mods and not mechanical's which tend to cause the explosions. Then other things like taking the heat into account - I have a cooler bag for my gear in summer so that it doesnt overheat. If the mod becomes warm, I take it apart, 90% of the time the batteries are still cool to the touch.

The vaping community in SA is actually extremely attentive to battery usage. We triple check batteries before buying that its a good quality and that the mod you use is rated to use it - the guys have actually done all the maths to calculate the safety margins for all the batteries.

I also don't charge my batteries unattended - I have a Nicore D2 charger specifically for this.
