Usb memory formating on xbox 360 uses 997mb?

Is it normal to use so much?

I have a 1gig stick and it uses the whole thing up after I format it with the 360.

Is it normal?
 
Yep. It basically installs software on it that allows it to be read as a storage device. I think it also has something to do with piracy or something.

Thought so. Just wanted to get some series for my mom to watch:-/ on xbox alas.
 
If it's just for watching stuff format as normal FAT32. The xbox format is for using it to store xbox stuff, like a bigger memory stick.
