Video game endings that let us down

RAGE - many years back.

Liked the story -- though it's all but a blur now.

Combat was good gameplay was good. Worth another play. But, that ending.

I was "Huh?! -- That's it?"

Before disagreeing with Marco on one point, I must first state as Grand Poobah that I think his picks were good.

There was a lot of discussion around BioShock Infinite when it released (which is part of what made it such a good game, I reckon), and if memory serves, the ending did stir a hot debate.

That said, I thought it was awesome. And then the Burial At Sea DLC messed it up.

Marco and I are in solid agreement when it comes to the Mass Effect's ending, though. Before the Extended Cut DLC I wrote a column for this 'ere website (Mass Effect 3's ending isn't that bad), but following the release of said DLC, I must be honest: I felt let down.

A game that isn't as high-profile as the ones Marco listed that also had a disappointing ending was Dark Matter. If you don't mind spoilers or don't plan to play it, check it out...

Original ending:

The developer's response:

We would like to stress that the game is exactly as described on Steam (including that it contains 14 levels) – it is simply not true that the game is unfinished, or unplayable. Some people have misquoted the developer as having admitted that the game is incomplete; we should reiterate that what was meant was that this is not the $30 full-priced game, but the episodic budget version (currently selling at $13,49 at 10% off).

And the new ending they pushed out with a patch:

Bioshock infinite had a some what shocking ending but at least everything was explained and it was conclusive, you had to kill Comstock and that's what you did. The story just withheld the fact that you were him all along to make the ending seem more twisted.

If you are going to click on a forum entry/article titled: "Video game endings that let us down", and not, at least, be prepared for potential spoilers, you're gonna have a bad time.

On that note: I thought Bioshock Infinite's ending was great. My brother told me not to bother with the DLC as it totally destroys the ending of Inifinite. I value his opinion strongly and that seems to echo what Jan said.

My thoughts exactly about this thread. I had to gradually read the article because of potential spoilers...

I agree with the notion of Crysis having a bad ending. It was an ending that blatantly pandered a sequel.
Also didn't enjoy the ending of Medal Of Honour, not the one where you save WW2, but the one where you run around in Afghanistan's mountains, and then suddenly just stop...:wtf:

I thought the ending of Bioshock Infinite was awesome :|

I reject this article :p

As for bad endings...I can't think of 1 off hand so I'll edit this post once I remember 1.

I just finished Bioshock Infinite. The ending was mind blowingly awesome! Absolutely amazing. I'm in awe. Everyone should finish this game.
