Good roads are the backbone of our economy, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Monday.

"Transport remains the heartbeat of South Africa's economic growth and development," she said speaking at The New Age's business breakfast in Midrand.

"Most of our roads network is older than 25-years-old and it has exceeded its design life and that is why we have so many potholes."

Yes but continued maintenance and care prevents potholes. Leaving the problem until it develops into potholes is not helpful though, nor is a sign warning of extreme potholes

Maintenance is fine and well if it is done properly but not if they take shortcuts :(.

Its the trucks causing lots of potholes not cause of the age of the roads, bring back the rail system and you will notice that the roads will improve and no more filling holes with sand which gets washed away when we have a rainy spell.
