Those craving a modern dose of classic shooter franchises can earn beta access for the next Doom game by purchasing Wolfenstein: The New Order. Although New Order will reach the PS3 and Xbox 360 in addition to PC, Xbox One and PS4, the Wolfenstein FAQ has revealed that fans will need to own a capable PC or current-generation console in order to partake in the Doom beta.

The page explains that those who have pre-ordered New Order for Xbox 360 or PS3 will still earn beta access, but it will be for the most recent offspring in Sony and Microsoft's families of consoles. Beta access is determined by which console your pre-order is placed for, so you won't be able to get PS4 beta access from a Xbox 360 copy.

Although beta keys will be packed in with physical copies of New Order on its May 20 launch date, a kickoff date for the beta itself has not been shared.

I'm very excited about this game. As long as it doesn't focus on the demonic stuff like in Doom 3 (gave me nightmares). I'll be fine. I know Wolfenstein does go into the whole Nazi obsession with the occult, but I've always found it was handled tastefully. Kinda like an Indiana Jones adventure of sorts.

The gameplay footage I've seen so far looks incredible though. Saying this game brings old-school violence back to FPS is an understatement. Geesh. :)

The gameplay footage does actually look pretty good. But I'm even more excited about some actual news about doom 4.

It looks like they're really bringing back the old-school madness with FPS games like duke nukem etc. I mean, shooting someone with a shotgun needs to be, and look, extremely violent. All I see in the gameplay footage is blood splatter and head-popping galore. If they manage to pull off the story correctly and maybe add 1 or 2 interesting mechanics, this may be one of the most fun FPS games released in years. Again, I can't wait :)

Erm... you do know that the entire Doom franchise is about demonic invasions from Hell, right? The second game was even entitled Doom 2: Hell on Earth. :p

Doom 3 was essentially a remake of the original Doom 1 game and from earlier leaked screenshots it seems Doom 4 will take place on Earth, indicating it might be a remake of Doom 2.

Anyway, if anyone is in the mood for some good old Doom but you're put off by the controls, try out BrutalDoom. It makes Doom even more gory (it essentially turns it into one of the goriest games I've played) and upgrades most of the systems to play more like a modern shooter, such as including mouse look and the like. It's a good way to kill an hour or two on a lazy afternoon.

I know mate. Which is why I said that I hope Wolfenstein doesn't focus on it as much as Doom does. I know the whole precipice around Doom, which is why I didn't even make it 1/3 through Doom 3 and will never even bother with any other Doom game again. However, Wolfenstein has always been "dark and creepy" without the in-your-face stuff that Doom uses.

So I have high hopes for this new instalment of Wolfenstein.
