Xbox 360 gets a hardware upgrade

That all nice and stuff Microsoft, but until you don't do something DRASTIC with the storage (ie: DVD -> BlueRay), the XB360 will start suffering hard under some of the newer titles...

So will this mean that people who don't own the new slim xbox's (like me :P) have to buy the processor separately?

So if you bought a slim a few months ago (december) then what? Are they going to give me a new console and take my old one?

oh boy
/starts the ps3 vs x360 vs pc vs iphone vs bb engines

Microsoft has also assured gamers that the new chip should have no compatibility issues with existing or future software, as it will “implement a latency and bandwidth that will impersonate the old system which worked with separate CPU and GPU processors”. Like DOSBox.
Have we not learnt that emulation isn't that great ?

I wonder if you can have your existing xbox upgraded?

I strongly doubt that. I may be wrong, but as far as MS and Xbox Hardware goes, my experience is that it is either new, or it stays the way it is. We don't have technicians over here (legal ones, of course). If your Xbox breaks, you have to trade it in for a new one at M-IT in Edenvale. Repairs and upgrades for Xbox is not something that we have over here (unless that has changed in the last year).

There is a vast difference between emulation (bad) and providing an identical interface (good).

Is it just me or does it seem like the original article was translated (badly) from another language?
contains about 372 million transistors which are very less in comparison to modern GPUs

Short answer; no.

Long answer; it's no impossible but it would involve changing just about everything in your xbox which would be the same as just buying a new one.

This is quite funny. Especially since the xbox360 slims processor is allready more powerfull than the original 360. So the "old" slim 360s are being throttled to stay inline with the original. And now the even newer and better xbox is being hold back even more.

This makes me think what the new versions will be capable if one could bypass all of these limitations to it? Faster loading, smoother game play?

Why even bother with this processor upgrade? I don't understand Microsoft's initiative to create upgraded processor hardware on the new slims... :S

The only thing that makes sense about that the machines runs cooler and draws less energy. If that makes it more reliable then I am all for it.

But yes, continuous upgrades doesnt make 100% sense to me either. Unless they are using it as some sort of test for future new xbox if the new architecture would work... But why roll it out to customers then.

They put new hardware because it's cheaper for them to make hence their profit per console goes up. As for them throttling the new consoles I don't think that is the case, I think games are just designed to work properly with the oldest models and if you have a new model you will see better performance in terms of more stable frame rates and possibly less loading time.

It's like playing a 5yr old game on your PC, you don't need to hamstring your machine to play it nor will it look any better than it did 5yrs ago, it'll just run better.

When you say suffering do you mean swapping discs?

Sure, lets stick that on the list too!
As it is, games are just getting bigger. Having such an extremely limited optical medium on a console forces developers to downscale things (eventually). Harder compression needs to be applied, causing longer load times and mid-play stuttering, etc.

It will just become a real impossibility to package a modern game into the space of 1DVD or even 2 or 3 - soon...

It's basically a matter of time until MS will have to consider swallowing their pride and getting into bed with Sony. In the mean time though, I think Xbox handles quite well. Play the same game on both consoles and the xbox just looks better. So what's the point of having a bluray version of a game if it's not gonna utilise more of the bluray capacity

If this gets rid of the RROD I might consider buying one again.

Im guessing you don't keep up to date with whats happening..but the RROD problem is practically gone. It was just upto the release of the Jasper units and yeah sure they still get a RROD now and then, its no where near what it was. Oh and before any ps3 fanboy's climb in, be warned a mate of mine owns a shop that repairs x360's and ps3's. The YLOD is also a problem and I know of plenty of people that got YLOD issues, even straight out of box YLOD lol.
