XBOX Live - can't play online due to lag? Solutions?

Hi guys,

The past weekend I upgraded back to XBOX Live gold status because I was looking forward to playing some Mortal Kombat against people online. After getting everything sorted I eventually joined a lobby and found a match. It really didn't go too well. The lag killed ANY chances of me winning. Some input commands plainly didn't even register and the ones that did only "appeared" on-screen a second or 2 afterwards.

Needless to say, you cannot play a fast-paced fighting game like that and expect to win.

My details:

My account is based on the UK servers (I didn't make an SA one yet - but I understand I can migrate to SA's live service?)
My ADSL line is fantastic. It's an 8MB line in fantastic shape. I can play Dota 2 on the American East Coast servers with less than 250ms latency - so the line is brilliant.

So what's the deal here? Is XBOX Live online gaming a lost cause? Or is there something I can do to drop these insane latencies? I'm aware that my account is on the UK live servers - but surely the latency shouldn't be that bad. Or it could be that the net-code on the MK game is just really bad.

I play on XBL quite a bit and have alot of lag in fighting games myself. Games like GTA IV and BF3 have very liitle lag and Call of Duty have a little more lag so you have to play smart.

So it really seems like it depends on the game but every fighting game I've tried on line has horrrendous lag.

Im on the SA XBL but I think its all based on servers in the USA so it really doesnt matter what region your account is set too, I recommend not changing to an SA account as there is very little content in comparison.

I don't think it matters what region your account is, but rather, if the game server you're connecting to is on the other side of the world.

I'm not sure if MK is server based or PTP, but if it's server based, you'll get bad latency unless there are SA servers you can connect to. If it's PTP, then you should find South Africans to play against, and hope that they are also on ADSL, or otherwise, you should host...

Thanks for the input guys. I remember playing some MvC 3 in the past and it was actually fine with very little lag - if there's nothing I can do on my side then, oh well :)

Yeah mortal kombat is terrible online in South Africa, most my other games are fine with no lag, but you were lucky to even find a match for MK.

Most Xbox games are P2P based MP, so make sure to only play with / against other locals. Else the lag will get you.
