World of StarCraft mod now StarCraft Universe, back in development

14 February 2011

After being hit with a Cease & Desist order from Blizzard for promoting their Starcraft mod as “World of StarCraft”, Ryan Winzen and his team are back in the pipe, five by five. It turns out he’s managed to reach some sort of compromise with the company, and renamed the mod to the somewhat-less-trademark-infringing StarCraft Universe.

The project – built with StarCraft II’s map editor – features:

A wide variety of monsters, bosses, and character classes. SCU classes include: Infantry, Special-Ops, Demolition, and many others.

A game save system. These maps will allows players to create, save, and load existing characters (a unique function uncommon to custom StarCraft maps).

Hundreds of customizable weapons, runes, and equipment to choose from. They can be acquired as loot or bought in shops.

Multiplayer experience. These maps allow (and encourage) up to twelve players in one match.

No release date has been announced yet, but it looks like they’re recruiting team members if you’d like to get involved. Check out their website for more information.
