How powerful is the hardware inside the PlayStation Neo?

Sony has announced its next-generation gaming console, PlayStation Neo, which will be more powerful and more efficient than the current PlayStation 4.

The company has remained relatively quiet regarding the device’s potential performance capabilities, although we have some idea of the hardware present inside the system thanks to an early specification leak.

Digital Foundry has used the leaked specifications of the PlayStation 4 Neo in order to simulate its performance using a PC gaming rig.

This concept is quite reasonable, as PlayStation Neo hardware will use AMD Radeon Polaris hardware and is closer to a PC platform than previous console iterations.

Because this test aims to measure graphics processing power, it focusses purely on graphics performance.

Below is a specification comparison of the Radeon RX 480 and the PlayStation Neo’s leaked specifications.

The graphics capabilities of the Radeon RX 480 and PlayStation Neo are similar enough to reasonably simulate the GPU performance of a PlayStation Neo by under-clocking the Polaris graphics card.

Because graphics performance is the sole focus of the simulation, Digital Foundry used a Core i7 6700K processor in order to avoid bottlenecks.

Below is the framerate of the PlayStation Neo simulation machine running Star Wars Battlefront at various resolutions:

  • 1,600 x 900 – 70FPS
  • 2,560 x 1,440 – 58FPS
  • 3,200 x 1,800 – 39FPS

The results of the simulation benchmark determined that the PlayStation Neo would simply be unable to deliver 4K gaming with its current specs, and instead aims at a sweet spot of 1,440p gaming at 60FPS.

This remains a large improvement from the current iteration of PlayStation 4, which features less than half the performance power and is based on older graphics architecture.

    The methodology is very wrong here. The console will also use processing power from that apu to run math in game and everything else happening in the console read write connectivity and a lot more. this also means that a lot more heat will be created and everything will throttle down. a secondary thing to consider is that the memory is shared with to operating system, game instance and everything else thus you will never have 8gb available to the graphics in game nor the memory’s full bandwidth. How ever on a pc you will. the short is with that hardware you cannot game in 4k (maybe if you played pac-man). this console will run at +/- 1080P and make use of an upscaler that will also consume both cpu gpu and ram. and to reduce lag from the process it will use alot of it. so you are looking at 1080P@30fps up-scaled to 4k and no more. unless they use a hardware upscaler but no info on that yet
