Every person in Johannesburg will have free Wi-Fi in next four years

23 August 2016

All 4 million Johannesburg residents are set to receive free Wi-Fi within the next four years, reports Fin24.

This is according to Zolani Matabese, Head of Broadband for the City of Johannesburg, who told Fin24 that 1,000 hot-spots for access to the internet would be installed around the municipality by year-end.

“The goal is to offer free Wi-Fi to each and every person in the city.”

“It is now a human right to have access to the internet so we’ve rolled out free Wi-Fi at BRT [Bus Rapid Transport] stations, at some of our rates offices and at theatres, which allow people access to 300MB per day.”

This means that Johannesburg should become a Smart city by 2020.
