22 February 2011

Microsoft’s announced that they’re releasing an official Kinect software devkit for PC sometime next month. That one guy out there who hasn’t already hacked his and turned it into a death-powered quadrotor vanguard of the incipient robot apocalypse? GUESS WHAT, YOU’RE IN LUCK!

The initial launch will apparently be some sort of free starter set “to make it simpler for the academic research and enthusiast communities to create rich natural user interfaces using Kinect technology”, Microsoft’s engies said in a press statement. A commercial release is scheduled to drop “at a later date”.

“Microsoft’s investments in natural user interfaces are vital to our long-term vision of creating computers that are intuitive to use and able to do far more for us,” said the company’s chief research and strategy officer, Craig Mundie. “The fruits of these research investments are manifesting across many of our products, Kinect for Xbox 360 among them. As breakthrough technologies like these reach scale, the resulting creativity and invention will open up a whole new world of possibilities for computing.”
