THQ recently announced that they had secured a publishing deal to bring indie survival-horror darling Amnesia: The Dark Descent to retail in North American stores. Amnesia has thus far only been available as a digital download. The developer Frictional Games has been giving regular updates on their sales, and at last count they claimed 200,000 sales – an exceptional success for a small indie outfit. So much so that they have come out in praise of the oft-maligned PC platform.

“With these figures at hand, we must confess that it gives us new confidence for the PC. The sales that we have had (and are having) are more than enough to motivate developing a game with the PC as the main (and even only) platform. Based on what we have seen, the online PC market is just getting bigger and bigger, and we are convinced we are far from the end of this growth. We think that other developers that consider making their game exclusive to a console might want to think again,” stated Frictional Games.
With the game coming in at a not insignificant 1GB download, news of a retail copy might appeal to some local gamers. Plus, everyone likes having a cool box to display on a shelf next to their rotten dog carcasses.

Unfortunately it doesn’t appear that South Africa will be getting the game at retail. MyGaming contacted local distributor of THQ products, Ster Kinekor, whom are still waiting for feedback from THQ. However, a Ster Kinekor representative did state that “I do not think it likely we will be marketing the title locally.”
All hope is not lost for those who want to get a boxed copy of this intense psychological horror game. While a publishing deal has been secured in Eastern Europe and Russia, Western Europe is that last region to have a publisher pick up the game. If and when this does happen, South African gamers may find themselves in luck, as we typically fall under this region for game publications.
