How South African retailers calculate pre-owned game prices

8 September 2016

Those of you who have visited a retail gaming store will no doubt have noticed the “pre-owned” gaming section.

They typically offer a better value for money proposition than newer games.

We asked AWX how they feel about pre-owned gaming in South Africa, how it affects them and how they calculate their prices.

Check out their answers below:

How much of AWX’s business focuses on pre-owned gaming?

A fair portion of our back catalogue business is catered to by second hand stocks.

Does South Africa’s pre-owned market hurt retail in any way?

It’s actually the opposite, especially considering the cost of new games, and the quantity of games the more dedicated gamer will buy in a month.

That is definitely the case from September to November, the months where we see the bulk of key AAA releases arrive.

Most of our new games sales and pre-orders are facilitated by credits used from our customers trading in their older or unwanted product through our trade in service.

Are there any specific challenges that come with selling pre-owned games?

As we deal with a dedicated gaming consumer base, often the gamer that likes to collect games and add to his library, we have to ensure that trade-ins are in great condition.

This does cause contention with some of the customers that are unable to trade with us due to the condition of the games they wish to trade, but it also fosters a respect for the product and we often see a change in mind set and understanding as to why we only accept games in good condition.

How do you calculate how much a person will receive when trading in?

As gamers ourselves we designed a system that factors the trade-in value based on the demand, trade in frequency and how recently title was released.

As previously mentioned, condition is important and we factor any promotions that may impact a trade value.

Once traded in, how do you determine how much that same product sells for?

Similar to how we factor the trade value, the retail price takes into consideration those criteria.

We pride ourselves on trying to offer the fairest values from trade-ins and structuring retail pricing from a gamer’s perspective.
