This free-to-play “knock-off” may be Overwatch’s biggest competition.

Paladins, dubbed “the poor man’s Overwatch” by its users, is a new team based shooter from Hi-Rez Studios.

The game sees a number of selectable “Champions” with wildly different skill-sets and strengths duke it out in the game’s 5v5 objective-based arenas.

It has a Dwarf-engineer (complete with turret), an armoured tank character with a massive movable shield and of course, a bow-wielding sniper.

It’s not just a clone however, insists Hi-Rez co-founder Todd Harris.

The game has been in active development since 2012 and the team at Hi-Rez actively pushed against designs that were overly similar to Blizzard’s shooter.

Still, Paladins does have one major big advantage over its competitor – its completely free.

As a result, at the time of writing the game has surpassed one million downloads on Steam, just ten days after the game’s official release on 16 September.
