News has been doing the rounds that an exploit published online allowed hackers to grab free MS points for Xbox LIVE. The stories were saying that over US$1 million have been swindled thus far.
Microsoft has reacted, saying they will be investigating the situation and will penalize users who are found using the exploit and the illegitimately generated product codes. How exactly they will be able to tell remains to be seen.
“We are aware of the situation and have taken steps to invalidate the codes obtained illegitimately,” Microsoft told Gamasutra.
“We take safety and security very seriously and require that Xbox Live members use the service in compliance with applicable laws and specifically prohibit people from engaging in illegal activity as a part of our Terms of Use and Code of Conduct,” said Microsoft.
“Our Policy and Enforcement team is evaluating whether or not certain individuals have violated the Terms of Use for Xbox Live and will take the appropriate enforcement on an individual basis. Codes obtained legitimately by users will not be impacted.”
Microsoft also claims that the reports of over US$1 million dollars’ worth of MS points being stolen were inaccurate. They declined to elaborate on how they are know this and on the exact figures.
