Microsoft justifies extortionate Games on Demand prices (in theory)

18 March 2011

In what might be the most brazen bit of corporate spin ever, Microsoft has justified the somewhat extortionate prices of Xbox LIVE’s Games on Demand titles by claiming their convenient, all-hours availability makes all the difference to (impulsive) buyers.

“No one retailer has the lowest pricing for every product, and our program is about giving people 24 x 7 convenience and selection when shopping for Xbox 360 games,” a Microsoft spokesperson explained to Eurogamer. “We’re incredibly excited about what Games on Demand means for digital distribution, and will continue to evaluate and evolve the service to meet market and consumer demands.”

Games are regularly added to the service’s catalogue at full launch retail prices of around R500-R600, despite – logically, at least – saving loads on distribution and packaging costs.

But, you know, sometimes it’s 3am, you’re about two thirds of a bottle of Klippies down, and you JUST HAVE TO HAVE FIFA STREET 3 RIGHT NOW. Blame yourselves, apparently.
