South African film Shepherds and Butchers hits South African screens next week and is already gathering massive international acclaim.
It’s already won the Maverick Award for best feature narrative and the Hasklell Wexler Award for best cinematography at the Woodstock Film Festival in New York state, reports Times Live.
Shepherds and Butchers is based on the true story of prison guard, Leon Labuschagne who snaps after witnessing several prisoner executions and kills seven members of a Diepsloot karate team in cold blood.
The movie may have strong local competition however, with Noem my Skollie being named South Africa’s official selection for the 89th edition of the Oscars.
To date, Tsotsi is the only South African film to walk-away with golden statuette but as can be evidenced by the strong films coming out of the country, South Africa may not have to wait much longer for another.
