Steam bans misleading screenshots from store pages

Steam will no longer allow store page images which are not actual in-game screenshots, reports Eurogamer.

This policy change will be implemented in Steam’s Discovery Update 2.0 patch, and aims to provide gamers with a better idea of actual gameplay.

Valve outlines the reason for this change in its update notes:

“When the ‘screenshot’ section of a store page is used for images other than screenshots that depict the game, it can make it harder for customers to understand what the product is that they are looking at,” said Valve.

“Please show customers what your game is actually like to play.”

The company has previously exhibited artwork on its Dota 2 Steam store page, although it is in the process of updating its store pages to include only in-game screenshots.

This follows recent controversy surrounding the store page for No Man’s Sky, which featured artwork, screenshots, and even a trailer from E3 2014 which did not properly reflect the game.

Valve’s Discovery Update 2.0 is reportedly a couple of weeks away from going live.
