Digital Foundry’s industry spies have confirmed that that a “new Xbox 360 disc format” announced ahead of an incoming testing program adds another 1 GB of storage capacity to the existing disc, supplying devs with an extra 15% of so of available space.
According to the report (over on mothership site, Eurogamer), the console’s standard DVD currently allocates only 6.8 GB of its available 7.9 GB storage capacity for game data, with the remainder “dedicated to a DVD-Video partition that also contained anti-piracy security sectors”.
In the call out for testers last night, Xbox HQ’s Major Nelson announced that program participants would receive a free copy of Halo: Reach – turns out that’s probably not a bonus goodie, but a game pressed to the new format. Since launch, the Xbox has used a range of DVD drives, including Hitachi, Benq, Samsung, and Liteon, so it’s obvious why Microsoft is looking to sign up “multiple thousands” of applicants.
