Renegade Ops is a new game coming from Swedish developer Avalanche Studios, who are known for their work on Just Cause 2. The game is to be published by SEGA. It will be a digital download only title, coming to XBLA, PSN and the PC during Q4 2011.
Avalanche describes the game as a military competitive co-op shooter which will put players in a mobile commando unit sent behind enemy lines to defeat Inferno, a madman intent on global domination and the commander of a sinister terrorist organisation. Inferno has detonated a devastating bomb to demonstrate the power of his new deadly weapon. Furious at the world’s leaders’ decision not to fight against Inferno, General Bryant has recruited a crack team of military specialists, known as the Renegade Ops, from around the globe to wage war against Inferno’s promise of world domination.
The game is built on the impressive Avalanche Engine 2.0, the same used for Just Cause 2, but the camera will be used in a top-down perspective. With the power of the Avalanche Engine 2.0 behind it, one can believe Avalnche’s claims that Renegade Ops will feature visually stunning environments. There will be a wide range of vehicles at player’s disposal, equipped with a variety of attacks, such as dispersing electromagnetic shock waves and the deployment of a huge Gatling gun.
The game’s modes will include single player but the real fun will likely lay with the competitive co-op modes. Players can team up offline with two-player split screen or join a 4-player online co-op mode. While players will be working together, they will also be competing for high-scores, achievements and the top position on the online leader boards.
“Renegade Ops is Avalanche Studios’ first strategic step into the world of digitally downloaded games, but certainly not the last. With a strong foundation in our unique technology, we can allow our teams working on digitally downloaded games to unleash their creativity,” said Linus Blomberg, Executive Producer at Avalanche Studios.
“A number of developers in the studio wanted to try developing a smaller digital project, so we gathered a team, built a new IP and SEGA gave us the opportunity to carry this out. The IP is all about driving or flying around blowing stuff up while playing with your friends and that to us, is a dream-project,” commented Andreas Thorsén, Senior Producer.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Thorsén elaborated further on the game: “We were finishing up Just Cause 2 and playing around with the engine and we thought, what would happen if we moved the camera up a bit to a top-down perspective?”
“We tried that and realised, wow, this is going to be an awesome game we want to play ourselves. We started creating a concept around that and at the same time we found out SEGA wanted to do something similar. So we did this,” said Thorsén. Renegade Ops will mark SEGA’s first new IP in the digital download space.
Continuing, Thorsén said that “A lot of inspiration came from looking at Shadow Complex and what they did to the Super Metroid mechanics. We wanted to do something similar, using old school mechanics created with the looks of today.”
Avalanche revealed that Renegade Ops takes further inspiration from Konami’s 1983 cult classic Jackal, and 1993 hits Cannon Fodder and Jungle Strike. Beyond these announcement details and the logo artwork, no more information has been forthcoming. We can expect more content updates and previews in the coming weeks.
