Blizzard has announced the Overwatch League, an e-sports league for its team-based shooter that will draw on the best practices of traditional sporting leagues.

Each team in the Overwatch League will represent a major city.

“Teams will have stability, players will have careers, and fans will have a new set of heroes to take them into the future of Overwatch,” Blizzard said.

“Our plan is to expand the league over time to include additional teams from the Americas, Europe, China, Korea, and the Asia Pacific region.”

Notably absent from Blizzard’s plans for the Overwatch League are Africa and the Middle East.

Blizzard details how team ownership and player contracts will work in the “Path to Glory” video below, with a focus on stability. Once accepted, teams will have a guaranteed spot in the league and players will have a contract that includes compensation and benefits.
