That era of Final Fantasy IX, Chrono Cross and then Dragon Quest VIII is near impossible to surpass. Then again it clearly looks like Square Enix aren’t even making a decent attempt to surpass the story telling and gameplay of those titles.
I’m surprised that Final Fantasy XII got so little attention in this article. For me that game was a clear indication that Square had lost its way.
