Garry’s Mod outs dirty pirates

13 April 2011

Yesterday a bunch of irate gamers began filling the Steam forums and Facepunch forums with complaints that their copy of Garry’s Mod was no longer working. Garry’s Mod is an indie creation which allows owners of Source Engine games to manipulate and experiment with the assets and physics.

It all began when Garry’s Mod creator Garry Newman posted innocently on Twitter: “Anyone unable to shade polygon normals?” People experiencing problems with Garry’s Mod were receiving the following message after starting the game: ‘Unable to shade polygon normals’ followed with a lengthy integer, which many presumed was the error code.

It turns out that in a wonderfully devious twist of events, Garry Newman had intentionally implemented the so-called ‘bug.’ This was a means of tricking dirty game pirates into revealing themselves.

“Just enabled this error in GMod today. It happens when you pirated it. Having fun watching people complain,” said Newman via Twitter. The ‘error code’ was in fact their Steam user ID, spelling bad news for the Steam accounts of the pirates.

Discuss Garry Newman’s devious plan on the MyGaming forum.
