Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin has announced via Twitter that the developer is “shooting for mod tools release in May.”
This will apply exclusively to the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Another Treyarch developer known as pcdev on Twitter announced in 2010 that a custom mod tool kit was always planned for Black Ops following its launch. “We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game,” said pcdev last year.
“There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game.”
Mod tools will allow gamers to develop custom configurations and rule sets for Black Ops – an important feature for a game that is to be played competitively. Call of Duty’s custom mod “Promod” remains a popular Call of Duty modification for competitive play, so we can expect Black Ops to get its own variation of Promod, which may help the game become more established in the competitive PC gaming community.
