10 reasons to be excited about Guild Wars 2

Whilst browsing the interworblez today, I stumbled across a fantastic video feature entitled “Guild Wars 2 – Top 10 reasons to be interested”.

Before watching it Guild Wars 2 was but a distant fuzzy cloud on my map of games to look out for in 2011. Having not played the original, but been told by numerous trusted sources that it is one of the most worthwhile MMO experiences available, my interest in the sequel was piqued long ago.

However, by reason number 6 of the below feature, Guild Wars 2 had been elevated to one of my most anticipated games of 2011 (hopefully).

This guy clearly knows what he’s talking about, so do yourself a favour and check out the video below. For those that can’t, I’ve transcribed the key points.

10. Production values 

Many developers have bought fantastic ideas to the MMO table over the past few years, but one consistent let down has been production values. Whether it be badly optimised code, glitchy textures, or a lack of polish, MMO’s have a bad rep for dropping the ball in terms of basic e-workmanship (yes I made that up). A quick browse through the numerous gameplay videos available online suggests otherwise of Guild Wars 2.

9. Jeremy Soule is doing the music

This guy is an absolute giant in the world of fantasy RPG video game sound design. Having worked on Icewind Dale, Nights of the Old Republic, Guildwars, Morrowind, Oblivion and the upcoming Skyrim, Soule’s soundtracks are nothing short of epic. Again, check out the trailers for a taste of what to expect.

8. Content scaling

Unlike most MMOs, taking on enemies of a much higher level is possible in Guild Wars 2, as long as you are able to avoid their blows. This ties in to point number 6 – dynamic combat. There will also be content designed for novices, or less skilled players.

7. Dynamic events

Random world events will occur in Guild Wars 2 at any given time. You might be sitting in a town when it is attacked by a horde of enemies, and if you and the town’s inhabitants are not able to defend it, it will become occupied. Not knowing what to expect next in the world of Tyria will lend greatly to the game’s overall sense of adventure.

6. Dynamic combat

There will be no auto attack in Guild Wars 2. Players will be able to block, dodge and manoeuvre when in combat situations. This should make for a far more engaging fighting experience.

5. FREE to play

Unlike almost all AAA MMOs these days, Guild Wars 2 will not carry a subscription fee. There will be micro-transactions, but they will not affect a character’s power.

4. Exciting art direction and epic scale

Guild Wars 2 has already shown off some incredibly epic scenery, with massive landscapes and mind-blowing constructions being the order of the day.  This has to be seen to be believed, so check out the trailers.

3. PVP

ArenaNet is working on a robust Player vs. Player system, which will allow players to level characters to maximum solely by battling other players. Combined with the dynamic combat system, and an interesting realm vs. realm ranking system, Guild Wars 2’s PVP is shaping up to be exciting and competitive.

2. Trademark unique guild wars weapons and ability system

Guild Wars 2 will feature the trademark weapons and abilities system from Guild Wars. Shortcut keys will enable players to combine abilities with weapons, offering a unique gameplay experience to that offered in traditional RPGs.

1. No tanks, no healers, no DPS

Guild Wars 2 will not use the tried and tested “tank, healer, DPS” formula present in most MMORPGs. No more waiting for a certain character class before embarking on a raid. Players will be responsible for themselves, although there will also be broader responsibility for team mates.

Unlike World of WarCraft and other MMOs, a party will not necessarily wipe if one player is not pulling their weight.
