Magicka sequel is definite, no bugs planned

4 May 2011

Arrowhead’s indie game Magicka stormed onto the gaming scene in January 2011, charming the robes off PC gamers with its tongue-in-cheek attitude, unique gameplay mechanic, and attractive low price.

According to publisher Paradox Interactive, the title shifted 30,000 copies in the first 24 hours of sale, and had surpassed 200,000 sales within the launch month – rather impressive stuff for a digitally distributed indie game. All this despite an inordinate number of bugs in the game, which have since been patched out. Since launching in April the first paid DLC expansion, Magicka Vietnam, has made over 100 000 sales.

With this rousing success, Paradox interactive CEO Fredrik Wester has confirm in an interview with Joystiq that a sequel is definitely on the cards. They do however hope that it will not ship with the overwhelming number of bugs that plagued MAgicka upon its launch.

“When we — and I’m not saying ‘if’ — but ‘when’ we are doing a sequel to this game, it’s going to be done on a totally different technology. It was super buggy at release. We addressed most of them in the first week, but there are still issues with laptops and a few other things. It’s due to the engine that we produced the game on,” said Wester. Magicka was developed on Microsoft XNA.

Wester further said in the interview that a Magicka console port is still a possibility. He said that a PSN version should be a “no brainer” but that they will only settle for an Xbox LIVE Arcade release, which offers a larger marketplace than Xbox LIVE Indie Games.
