Anonymous denies responsibility for PSN hack (again)

5 May 2011

In a response to the US Congress enquiry into the PSN security breach yesterday, Sony’s Kaz Hirai implicated hacker collective Anonymous, saying the company’s engineers had discovered a rogue file on the network, named “Anonymous” with the group’s slogan “We are legion” included.

In a public statement, however, Anonymous has (again) denied any responsibility for the attack.

“If a legitimate and honest investigation into credit card theft is conducted, Anonymous will not be found liable,” it said.

“While we are a distributed and decentralised group, our ‘leadership’ does not condone credit card theft. We are concerned with the erosion of privacy and fair use, the spread of corporate feudalism, the abuse of power and the justifications of executives and leaders who believe themselves immune personally and financially for the actions the undertake in the name of corporations and public office.”

The PSN has now been offline for two weeks, amidst growing scandal and speculation of personal data theft and credit card scams.
