Sony has delayed the restoration of PSN services as a result of yet another hacking attack against its website. This is likely the attack promised by Anonymous which we reported on yesterday.
The names of 2,500 sweepstakes contestants which had been stolen by hackers were published on a Sony website. “The website was out of date and inactive when discovered as part of the continued attacks on Sony,” the company said. The website has since been taken down and the details removed. The details posted included names and partial addresses and three unconfirmed e-mails. They did not include any credit card, social security, or password details.
This is likely going to be another frustrating blow to PSN users who have been without online services for three weeks now.
Sony has been in dire straits this year. First there was the release of the security key for their console which opened up the floodgates of hacking, cheating and piracy on the system. They then engaged in a legal battle with the hacker responsible for releasing the security key, George ‘GeoHot’ Hotz.
This legal battle drew the attention of notorious hacking outfit, Anonymous, who vowed to punish Sony for their actions against Hotz, and those who supported or showed interest in his security key leak. This has all come to a head with Sony’s current hacker woes, as fingers are being pointed towards Anonymous being responsible for the massive breach which saw over 70 million user accounts details possibly compromised, resulting in the shutdown of the PlayStation Network.
