Activision Blizzard is holding an event to announce its first quarter 2011 results this evening, and besides from hearing about all the millions and billions of dollars that World of Warcraft and Call of Duty are pulling in, we are expecting details about the forthcoming Diablo III beta to be revealed.
The conference will be broadcast live online today at 1:30PM Pacific Time, which translates to 10:30PM our time.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said at the company’s last conference call that details about the Diablo III beta test would be revealed at the next financial conference call.
“As for Diablo III, development continues to go well, and we’re very excited about the game. Our most recent public showcase for Diablo III was at the G-Star show in Korea, where demo stations attracted huge lines of players. I’m looking forward to sharing some more news about the game and our upcoming beta on the next call,” said Morhaime on February 9th, 2011.
Diablo III will take place in Sanctuary 20 years after Diablo II. The game will run on Blizzard’s own proprietary engine, and will feature destructible environments. Staying true to Blizzard’s development philosophy, it will be able to run on a wide variety of PCs and will not require DirectX 10 or 11. Battle.net will provide the backbone for a multiplayer component, which will allow players to drop in and out of cooperative gameplay sequences with friends.
To ensure different replay systems, Diablo III will utilise a random level and random encounter generator, as well as an enhanced quest system.
Diablo III is easily one of the most anticipated games of this generation, and although a firm release date has not been confirmed, hopefuls are holding out for a late 2011 release, while the less optimistic are expecting it sometime next year.
