Google has revealed the performance specifications of its Tensor Processing Unit.

The TPU is Google’s first machine-learning chip and boasts superior performance to Intel server processors and Nvidia’s Tesla K80.

According to Google, the TPU is between 15 and 30-times faster than modern CPUs and GPUs while achieving better power efficiency.

TPUs power the technology underlying Google Image Search, Google Photos, the Google Cloud Vision API, and more.

These custom chips have been running machine learning applications in Google data centres since 2015.
