How MWEB plans to improve MMO latency

11 May 2011

South African gamers who have dipped their toes into the world of massively multiplayer online gaming will know all too well the perils of high latencies. Many have become accustomed to playing games such as World of Warcraft or the recently released Rift at latencies ranging between 300-600 milliseconds, and in many cases even higher. Of course, there are ways to improve your latency when connecting to international servers, but many of them may require technical savvy that some gamers don’t possess, or may cost money to implement or use.

MWEB has been looking at ways it can improve its service for gamers for a while. A deal with Gameservers has given MWEB locally hosted servers for over 53 games, and the MWEB Steam mirror is one of the most used Steam servers in SA.

Today MWEB has announced its plans to improve the online experience for players connecting to international servers, such as World of Warcraft. As part of its online service, MWEB is now offering 500, 6-month WTFast subscriptions. WTFast is essentially a subscription based proxy service which provides players with the best route to the servers they are playing on. This means that when connecting to a World of Warcraft server, instead of your traffic being routed alongside regular traffic, your connection will run via the WTFast connection path, and theoretically ensure the lowest latency possible.

“Simply put, when you usually play the game, your data is often going down slow side streets and alleyways. The WTFast software allows your data to be on a fast freeway with no speed limits right to the game servers,” explained MWEB’s Nathier Kasu.

“WTFast will essentially reduce latency, reduce disconnections, reduce lag spikes and improve the overall gaming performance in multiplayer gaming situations,” reads the MWEB press release.

WTFast is a subscription based service, but MWEB is footing the bill for the first six months for the first 500 MWEB users who subscribe. Find out more about how to take advantage of this offer on MWEB.co.za/gamezone, and just ignore the image of the MMO gamer playing with an Xbox 360 control pad.

We will be looking into the WTFast service and running tests on an MWEB account to determine what sort of improvement it offers.
