23 million people suffered the chain o’ shame in Gears of War 3 beta

19 May 2011

The Gears of War 3 public multiplayer beta has gibbed its last grunt, and Epic Games has released all the important numbers about it in loving memory.

According to the announcement, 1.29 million players took part during the four-week period, clocking up a pretty impressive 249 years of game time over 11 million matches. That’s also 927 million frags, 131 million executions, 23 million deaths by chainsaw, and 23 billion bullets fired.

But wait, there’s more – 4.9 billion ribbons and 291 million medals were also awarded, 435,000 players unlocked the beta-exclusive Thrashball Cole skin, and 234,000 blagged the beta-exclusive and totally kitsch Gold Retro Lancer.

“An overwhelming success – we can’t thank the fans enough,” says Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski. “While the beta was a fun way to give players an early taste of our game, it also provided us with invaluable feedback to help us refine and polish Gears of War 3 to ensure it’s truly the culmination of the trilogy we promised to the fans.”

The game’s scheduled to drop in September, and has already passed 1 million preorders worldwide.
