Local Wii price cut confirmed, now R800 cheaper

19 May 2011

Earlier this month Nintendo announced a 28% price reduction on the Nintendo Wii console in the UK, bringing the console down from £179 (R1,957) to £129 (R1,410). The new price is to kick in from this week Friday, 20 May.

Currently the Wii still carries a local recommended retail price of R2,500, but we calculated that if SA receives a similar price reduction then it should be reduced to around R1,800, which is almost half of what it cost less than two years ago. We contacted local Wii distributor Core, who at the time was unable to confirm whether we would be seeing a local price reduction.

Core has since announced that South Africa will indeed be getting a local price cut as of 20 May. Incredible Connection is the first major retailer to confirm new local pricing, announcing today that its Wii bundles will be reduced by R800, down to R1,599.95 each.

The following bundles have been confirmed to be reduced to R1,599.95.

•    Wii Console with Sports Pack – Black
•    Wii Console with Mario Kart – Red (25 year edition)
•    Wii Console with Mario Kart – Black
•    Wii Console with Sports Resort Pack – White
•    Wii Console with Sports pack + Wii FIT Plus – White

The retailer advises potential customers to call ahead to ensure that their nearest Incredible Connection store has stock.

Other local retailers are likely to follow suit, so we can expect similar Wii price cuts accross the board.
