The Hellgates of London are prepping to reopen this year. New, South Korean-based publisher HanbitSoft has announced that they’re relaunching the game as a closed beta from 3-5 June, with a full, free-to-play North American release following sometime thereafter.
It’s not yet been confirmed if the game will see a release in other territories, although it hasn’t been officially denied either.
After a somewhat disastrous launch back in 2007, and a pretty ignominious closure in February 2009, Flagship’s apocalyptic Diablo-with-guns MMOFPSRPGLOL didn’t quite manage to be the next big thing it was expected to be.
In November 2008, HanbitSoft acquired both the Hellgate: London and Mythos franchises from Flagship.
In a recent interview with the Escapist, Flagship’s Bill Roper admits the project was just too ambitious.
“The biggest failure with Hellgate is we just tried to do too much,” he says. “We were a single-player game, or you could go online and play for free. And there was also this hybrid subscription model that you could get into. We shipped in 17 languages, we had a very high-end graphics engine that we had built but at the same time we did low-poly versions of the game. I mean, the list just went on and on and on.”
