A new challenger appears! UK retailer GAME has stepped into the ring to fight for the occasionally controversial pre-owned market, saying it’s “good for the whole industry”. Which should probably be obvious, but somebody important over at Max Profit HQ must’ve missed that memo or something.
In a recent interview with trade mag MCVUK, GAME CEO Ian Shepherd says that, despite publishers employing deterrents disguised as online passes, the general attitude towards the somewhat vilified market is perhaps changing.
“I think, through conversations with developers and platform owners, that there is a growing realisation that a healthy pre-owned marketplace is good for the whole industry,” he explains. “It has made the mint marketplace more affordable and has kept people in that marketplace.
“There has been endless debate over pre-owned versus mint, but my view is that a healthy pre-owned and trade-in marketplace – which we are largely the people who are involved in driving – is good for the whole industry.”
