Age of Conan to get free-to-play option

25 May 2011

Funcom has announced that it will be introducing a free-to-play model for Age of Conan, which will work alongside the current subscription setup.

On top of this, the game will also get an oh-so-edgy new name. What we now refer to as Age of Conan will soon be called… wait for it…

AGE OF CONAN: UNRATED

The game will also be getting a new batch of content, and the facelift is aiming to capitalise on the potential upswing in Conan interest generated by the upcoming Conan movie.

“The time is right for Age of Conan now as we recognised the opportunity presented by the increased profile of the license, with the new Conan movie coming out this Fall,” said the game’s executive producer Craig Morrison.

“That meant that we felt that the time had come to make the switch to ensure we had the best possible position and availability for when that interests increases, so that we could draw in even more users to this wonderful world that we have brought to life.”

It will be possible to pay a once off fee for the game and play to level 80 without paying an additional cent. Free-to-play users will however have to hand over cash for items such as potions, scrolls, premium location passes, new pets, mounts and bags.

Subscribers will get all that stuff for free. Apparently, free-to-play players will be able to access all the game’s original content for free, so that’s something.

Lastly, to help nullify the game’s dwindling player base, all Age of Conan servers will be merged to coinside with the “Unrated” rebranding.

Morrison’s official statement on the merger is: “We wanted to make sure that people don’t have to worry about choosing the ‘wrong’ server for them. We want the definitions to be easy, so the choice will more be ‘do I play on the PVE server, the PVP server or the hardcore server?’ and not have to think about ‘which PVE server should I play on?”
