Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy game announced

25 May 2011

Hothead Games – purveyor of such fine titles Penny Arcade Adventures and Deadspank – has announced that they’re doing a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy game. That’s pretty much it, though. No details, no platform info, no release date, not even some Vogon poetry.

Officially, there’s been only one video game adaptation of the series, in the form of an Infocom text adventure, released in 1984, and co-written by Douglas Adams himself.

The game was notorious for a difficult puzzle involving the acquisition of a Babel Fish, which – if not solved within a certain number of turns – would render the game unwinnable, but without informing the player of this unhappy turn of events.

Infocom later marketed a t-shirt with the slogan “I got the Babel Fish”, but didn’t apologise for being such a bunch of bastards.

In 2004, the BBC celebrated the game’s 20-year anniversary by relaunching it online with a Flash interface and pretty pictures.

Go on, it’s not like you have anything important to do today.
