Telkom today confirmed that they are actively upgrading ADSL speeds at no cost to subscribers
512Kbps ADSL subscribers across South Africa started reporting speed upgrades to 1Mbps in early May, in line with new Telkom CEO Pinky Moholi’s strategy of adding more value to ADSL subscribers.
Telkom would however not officially confirm these upgrades, and previously ignored requests for information about the higher ADSL speeds.
But the company changed tack today and confirmed details about the speed upgrades after MWEB sent out a press statement about their free uncapped ADSL package upgrades (on the back of Telkom’s 512Kbps to 1Mbps upgrades).
Telkom said that they began the upgrades of the 512kpbs ADSL subscribers to 1Mbps on 1 May 2011, and have already completed most of the line conversions.
“Certain subscribers could not be upgraded due to system constraints. Telkom will attend to these subscribers during the month of June 2011, where network conditions allow. Telkom will continue the upgrades on an ongoing basis,” the company said.
Telkom also dismissed previous reports emanating from the company that the upgrades form part of a trial.
“This is not a trial. All upgrades will apply nationally where conditions allow. The upgrades will continue on an ongoing basis and is not subject to the results of any trial,” the company said.
Telkom further confirmed that all upgrades have been carried out at no additional fee to the subscriber.
