The Witcher 2 Steam patch is 9GB – CD Projekt RED explains

30 May 2011

The Witcher 2 version 1.1 patch launched just in time for the weekend, and many gamers were simply thankful for the performance boost despite the fact that the DLC still isn’t working properly.

Weighing in at a comfortable 15MB, the patch was an insignificant download for most – except those who own the Steam version of The Witcher 2. Their patch came in at a whopping 9GB. For South African gamers operating on relatively slow line speeds, such a large patch might have put them out of action for an entire evening or even the whole weekend while downloading.

Those would be the fortunate gamers using uncapped ADSL accounts. In a country where wireless internet connections are predominant, the cost associated with downloading large files is prohibitive. The question is: will future The Witcher 2 patches be this large?

Developers CD Projekt RED have spoken to Eurogamer on the issue and have explained why the first patch was so large and how this pertains to future updates. Apparently the patch alters the 9GB The Witcher 2 archive file and due to the way Steam works, the entire thing has to be redownloaded.

“We are very sorry for gamers who have to download that much data and we agree that no one should be forced to do it just for one patch. We are aware of the situation and due to its nature we are in close cooperation with Steam, working together on resolving this issue. Unfortunately it takes some time. We will have more information ready on Monday. We are really sorry for inconvenience,” stated CD Projekt RED.

At the time of publication, no news has been posted on The Witcher 2 community webpage. Keep an eye on it for updates.

It is good to see a developer that takes on full responsibility for the flaws in the launch of their game, issues humble apologies, and strives to fix things as quickly as possible. Another great display of customer centric attitude comes from CD Projekt RED in their promise to replace any of The Witcher 2 Collector’s Edition Geralt clay sculptures that were damaged during shipping.
