The fair usage limits on Telkom’s LIT media platform

Telkom will launch its new media platform, LIT, on 1 September, offering FreeMe contract subscribers free music and video streaming from selected services.

LIT Music is available to contract subscribers on FreeMe 2GB and greater, while LIT Video will be on FreeMe 5GB packages and up.

Both LIT services will be enabled by default on the accounts of qualifying customers.

Fair use

Telkom told MyBroadband that LIT will be governed by a fair use policy, but that the usage thresholds are set with the aim that they should not limit subscribers.

• For LIT Music – the fair use threshold is 10GB per month.
• For LIT Video – the fair use threshold is 50GB per month.

Telkom estimates that the 50GB video limit is enough for subscribers to watch two full-length movies on their phones each day.

In the event that a subscriber hits the limit, Telkom said its fair use policy will work similarly to a soft cap.

Situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and subscribers may be allowed to go over the threshold.

At launch, LIT Music will zero-rate traffic from the following services:

• Google Play Music
• Apple Music
• iTunes
• Simfy Africa

Services that will be zero-rated as part of Telkom LIT Video at launch are:

• Netflix
• Showmax
• YouTube
• Google Play Movies
• iTunes
• DStv BoxOffice
• DStv Now

Subscriptions and content from the streaming services must be purchased separately, said Telkom.
