Hackers: “This is the beginning of the end for Sony”

31 May 2011

In news that will doubtless make some people want to KILL STUFF WITH FIRE, a bunch of hackers are threatening renewed action against Sony. Just when you’d organised that Portal 2 co-op session for this weekend.

Hacker collective ‘LulzSec’ – reportedly responsible for last week’s intrusion on Sony BMG’s Japanese website, as well as PBS and Fox sites (but not confirmed responsible for the PSN breach) – posted on Twitter this past Friday: “We’re working on another Sony operation. We’ve condensed all our excited tweets into this one: this is the beginning of the end for Sony.”

A follow-up Tweet yesterday read: “#Sownage (Sony + Ownage) Phase 1 will begin within the next day. We may have a pre-game show for you folks though. Stay tuned.”

Seriously, “sownage”? Shouldn’t 12-year olds be in school?

Sony has not yet commented on the matter. Maybe they’re just completely unconcerned.

The company issued a press statement last night patting themselves on the back for restoring most PSN services to the Americas and Europe on 15 May and then doing the same in much of Asia on 28 May. Details for fully resumed PlayStation Network services in Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea, and a full resumption of Qriocity will be announced as they become available, Sony said. The company plans to have most PlayStation services restored by the weekend.

The last time a group of hackers made a threat against Sony, many dismissed it as mere foolish talk. Perhaps Sony customers should brace for another attack on the back of these new threats.

Now we play the waiting game.
