Blizzard DOTA to launch with Heart of the Swarm

1 June 2011

Blizzard recently pulled the veil back and shared a bunch of details on its upcoming StarCraft II expansion: StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

But what about Blizzard DOTA? You know, that StarCraft II mod that Blizzard is working on which will be based on DOTA and star numerous heroes from Blizzard’s various IPs? Well, they are still working on it.

According to lead producer Chris Sigaty, while Blizzard was able to release its other 3 official StarCraft II map mods earlier this year, Blizzard DOTA needs a little extra work.

“We basically put it back up in the shop and did some massive overhauls to some things, which I’m not going to go into specific detail about,” Sigaty told Joystiq at a recent press event. “But yeah, we are working on Blizzard Dota, and we do intend to launch it at or around the time of Heart of the Swarm, but the official details will be online later.”

Sigaty was asked whether the mod will require the incoming Heart of the Swarm expansion pack to play, but he could not give an answer, sticking with “We’re not even talking about the business level decision of it at this point.”

Blizzard DOTA will run in the StarCraft II engine

When it was announced last year, it was confirmed the the following characters will make an appearance in Blizzard DOTA:

  • Jim Raynor (StarCraft II)
  • Sarah Kerrigan (StarCraft II)
  • Zeratul (StarCraft II)
  • Sylvana (Warcraft)
  • Muradin (Warcraft)
  • Baby Murloc in a Space Marine suit (Warcraft meets StarCraft)
  • Blizzard’s house mascot Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftan (Warcraft)

To confuse the issue, Valve last year bought the official rights to the “DOTA” franchise, despite the fact that the original game is a fan-made custom map for Blizzard’s WarCraft III. The company also confirmed it will be releasing DOTA 2 this year, but we have not heard much more on the game since then.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is expected to be released either later this year or early next year.
