I have been weighing up the pros and cons of all the different headsets and found that the Oculus Rift is the only one to not even register as a blip on my radar. The Vive is far better but still only a games system. WMR HMDs allows you to run your desktop apps in VR AND play SteamVR titles. Definitely the best option to get that…
Of all the WMR HMDs the Odyssey was by far the only choice as it has a higher pixel density and does NOT have an LCD for the display like every single last one of the others. This is the only option worth investing in. Period. The only problem I have with this entire WMR HMDs option is that horrible Home experience where you first have to travel a couple of teleports before you can get to use the app you want to use. That is bullshirt. I want to click on a window and use it… not travel for 20 to 80 seconds before I am in front of one of my apps and can finally use it… That is just bad, bad, bad designing….
So my friend sent mea link to show the new Oculus Go that is being released for $199 and I thought to myself “yeah, yeah. I’ve already seen the Vive go and it is worthless” but I went and watched the keynote anyway… halfway through I bought my Oculus Rift. Brand new + shipping + import duties total cost R7800. Absolutely worth it.
There is no hardware improvements at all but the software update coming in December means it stands head and shoulders above anything else. Now the Rift can also show your desktop apps BUT you arrange it around where you are standing/sitting so you can just turn your head and touch that panel or this one or the one over there and with one touch you are inside whatever app you want to be. No more travelling and taking ages to go from one app to the next… Everything the WMR HMD offer only better AND the Rift is now the cheapest HMD out there with the new retail price matching the cheapest WMR HMDs… $100 cheaper than the Odyssey, comes with 6 bundled games, runs desktop apps and solves the major gripe I had with the WMR systems.
Guess it’s time for me to drill some holes in my walls 😀
