Netflix today is known for its great streaming service and captivating original content, but the company started out shipping DVDs to subscribers.
The DVD portion of the business – which was split from Netflix in 2011 – still has a large subscriber base in the US, currently at 3.7 million, reported Recode.
The DVD service costs $7.99 per month, and users are shipped DVD movies in the post – based on their list of movie requests – after which they post them back to Netflix.
The Netflix streaming service was originally a free bonus for DVD subscribers when it launched.
