PS Vita (NGP/PSP2) pricing revealed, launching this year

7 June 2011

Arguably the biggest announcement to come out of Sony’s E3 keynote address was that the PS Vita, previously referred to as NGP, will cost between $249 (R1689) and $299 (R2028) at launch. The $249 PS Vita will be WiFi only, while the more expensive variant will offer 3G support.

Sadly for Europeans, and South African’s alike since we’re locked in to EU pricing, their pricing will be identical in number to the US’s. So €249 (R2465) for WiFi only and €299 (R2960) for WiFi and 3G.

That means if we are lucky, we might see the WiFi version retail for under R3,000 in SA, and the 3G version closer to the R3,500 mark. We expect SterKinekor to reveal local pricing in the coming weeks.

The announced pricing shocked the E3 audience, who for the most part were expecting a much higher launch price for the high-end portable device.

Sony also announced that the  device will launch globally by the end of 2011. The company also explained the decision to call the device PS Vita (pronounced “veeta”), claiming that Vita is Latin for “Life”. Yea, we’re not convinced.

Sony then revealed a list of developers currently confirmed to make games for the device:

North America

Activision, Inc.

Paramount Digital Entertainment

Capybara Games

PopCap Games

“CCP”

Powerhead Games

Demiurge Studios

Rockster Games

Electronic Arts

THQ

Epic Games Inc.

Trendy Entertainment
