Epic Games has joined Sony, Codemasters, and Nintendo (and, presumably, more to come) in the angryface ranks of hack statistics, after the developer’s forums and website were compromised over the weekend.
In an email to users, Epic’s Tim Sweeney writes that, “The hackers may have obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plaintext passwords weren’t revealed, but it’s possible that those passwords could be obtained by a brute-force attack on the encrypted passwords. Therefore, we have reset all passwords.”
He adds that the private Unreal Developer Network (UDN) has remained secure throughout, and that “none of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other financial data” so there’s not much cause for alarm.
One has to wonder what the point of it is, besides the obvious possibility that increased activity of this sort of going to lead to stricter internet regulations. Which does seem sort of self-defeating.
