Lulzsec targets gamers in hacking rampage

15 June 2011

Last night Minecraft, EVE Online, League of Legends and Escapist Magazine were all targeted by LulzSec’s DDoS “Lulz Cannon” for no obvious reason, but then that probably wouldn’t be as funny or something. I don’t know, I can’t pretend to understand the motivations of these people either, but at least it’s clear they hate everybody equally. Bigotry is so last month.

Minecraft’s login servers have been subsequently restored (for the moment, anyway), but at the time of writing EVE Online was still out of commission. Escapist Magazine also recovered fairly quickly, but at the time of writing League of Legends’ login servers will still down.

The group is referring to current activities as “Titanic Takeover Tuesday” on their Twitter stream, suggesting they’re not done yet. The attacks on Minecraft and EVE Online followed on from the takedown ofThe Escapist, seemingly in retaliation for some negativity commentary about LulzSec. Apparently Kim Jong Il is running the operation now.

Over the last week or so, LulzSec has also claimed responsibility for attacks on Nintendo, Bethesda, Sony, Epic Games, and others.

Apart from simply being “in it for the lulz”, Lulzsec is supposedly driven by a desire to point out security flaws in established websites, as opposed to stealing sensitive data for criminal purposes. Commenting on their recent attack on Nintendo, Lulzsec posted “We’re not targeting Nintendo. We like the N64 too much — we sincerely hope Nintendo plugs the gap.” However, Lulzsec also recently said that it is “the beginning of the end” for Sony.
