Chinese smartphone company Oppo claims to have a new technology that fully charges smartphones within nine minutes.

This rapid charging technology is called SuperVooc and was revealed by Oppo at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.

“We have been working on Vooc technology since 2014. It was relatively fast back then, and it has carried on evolving,” said Oppo UK product manager Neil Monger.

“It’s not just about speed – it is also about doing it in a way that is safe for our customers.”

SuperVooc has been tested extensively to ensure it won’t cause heat damage to the phone battery, and smartphones that use this technology will also come with 13 temperature sensors to protect the battery.

Oppo reports that its batteries will retain 80% capacity after 1,600 charges – twice the regular number of 800.

The SuperVooc charging technology will be implemented with phones coming later this year.
