BioWare forums hacked, 18,000 personal accounts stolen

17 June 2011

BioWare has confirmed that it is the latest victim of a recent surge in security hacks against companies working in the video games industry.

EA has confirmed that personal details for roughly 18,000 users have been stolen from the Neverwinter Nights forum, calling it a “highly complicated and unlawful cyber attack”.

EA remains adamant that the breach was “extremely limited”, saying the hackers only gained access to a very small portion of user accounts on the database. The information stolen includes account names, real names, e-mail addresses, passwords, nationality and birthdays.

In response to the breach, EA has resecured the forum’s server system and is now investigating its own security to determine where improvements need to be made.

BioWare joins Sony, Bethesda, CCP (Eve Online), Mojang (Minecraft), Codemasters, S2 Games and Epic Games on the list of games companies that have fallen victim to cyber crime this year.
