According to Gamersbook, Valve’s Doug Lombardi has confirmed that DotA 2 is being developed as a free-to-play game.
This follows the company’s recent move to allow free-to-play games to be distributed via Steam. Steam currently supports micro transactions, however, it remains unclear whether DotA 2 will make use of these.
It may well be the case that Valve will offer the game completely free for the sole-purpose of promoting the Steam platform. After all, more people using Steam on a daily basis means more people browsing the Steam storefront, and ultimately buying games.
The original DotA was a community developed project using the WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos map editor. The original game was instrumental in birthing a unique game genre, and has gone on to become one of most widely played PC games in the world.
Valve announced last year that it had hired ex-DotA lead designer Icefrog, and bought the rights to the DOTA brand. Shortly thereafter DotA 2 was announced, and we are expecting it to be shown off at Gamescom in August.
